Be Aware: Always report any theft, no matter how small, as it all feeds into the database and could possibly link other crimes together and uncover bigger problems. Pay attention to your neighbors and unfamiliar cars, and lock your cars at night. Several neighbors have had items stolen from their unlocked cars between the hours of midnight and 6 am.

Tips from a Crime Prevention Specialist:
  • In Solana Beach the SD County Sheriff's Department is responsible for law enforcement. Call NON-EMERGENCY number 858-565-5200 to report burglary, theft, suspicious activity, miscellaneous gunfire, vandalism, etc.
  • Call EMERGENCY 911 in case of lives in danger, fire, crime in progress, medical emergency
  • Use a 'land line' if accessible, rather than a mobile phone, for more immediate connection to help
  • There is more crime during the Fair and Racing seasons
  • Most burglaries occur between 10am and 3pm when residents are at work
  • Lock cars and house, keep garage doors and window coverings closed, don't leave valuable items in view
  • Photograph suspicious people and vehic, including the license plate number
  • Door-to-door solicitors are required to obtain a Solicitor's License from the City and to show photo ID; send them away and report them to Sheriff's department if they can't show you one
  • Surveillance cameras should have high resolution and infrared capability to be really effective
  • 'Ring' doorbells with cameras are available at Home Depot, Costco and other places; they connect to your mobile phone wherever you are; stick-up cameras are also available for backyards
  • Don't leave newspapers in driveway. Good outdoor lighting and a dog in the house are good deterrents

Coyotes

Coyotes

Coyotes, mountain lions & bobcats are native to the area and can be attracted around homes by leaving pet food out, the presence of small pets, etc. State Fish and Game warn people to not leave food or pets outside and keep a close eye on small children, especially during early morning or late afternoon times.
If you see a coyote approaching you, here’s what you should do:

  • Stop and yell at it to go away
  • Make yourself look big and scary by waving your arms above your head
  • Maintain eye contact
  • Stomp your feet and make loud noise
  • Always maintain a safe distance

When hazing a coyote, it’s important to continue to do this until the coyote leaves the area. If the coyote continues to hang around, take a couple steps forward, stop and yell again. For more information, refer to the website below:

Bees

Bees

Bee season is Spring-Fall and you may become aware of a hive in your yard. Pick your bee removal company carefully as many claim to take the hives to a special location but end up tossing them in the nearest dumpster. One favorite location of the bees for forming a hive is the irrigation valve control boxes. If you remove a hive from a valve box, be sure to cover the opening with netting or fill the box with foam/insulation to prevent them from coming back. We love bees, but not in unsafe locations!
